Sketch Dump 5/7/10

Dont usually scan in sketches, but I thought it might help me urge myself into finishing some of those pictures. I really like several of them, but the image I have in my head for the finished piece is much grander than what I usually do so its hard to push forward on them.

While some of the others are just concepts and practice sketches that came out relatively interesting to me.

Continued exploration

Trinity Anglican Church up in Thomasville, GA is built and beautiful. I was asked to do a drawing of the building. It was a great chance to work on some scenery and practice my coloring. Heres a looksey.

Breaking out of my bubble

While I dont feel like I’ve really been able to nail down a style that I can call my own, my art definitely all stands together. At least usually. This week I decided to try something a little different a little more cartooney. After a conversation with a friend about the new Spider-Man shattered dimensions game, we thought it would be funny if 1 of the unannounced dimensions was modeled after the old cartoons like “Steamboat Willie”. Heres the result.

Fresh air.

This spring weather has brought about pollen. So much pollen and lets face it, it kinda sucks; but while my literal air is a murky yellow, the season has brought about a breath of metaphorical fresh air as well.

I havent posted on the blog lately, but I have been drawing. I’m gonna toss a few up here now, but as usual, if u wanna see more, check out the portfolio or the DA page.  Man I”m sleepy… :)

Triumphant Return

Woo! I’m back. The last few weeks have had me barely moving. Partly due to health issues, and partly due to the very literal “pile” of video games I’ve been trying to work through. Let’s go a little deeper shall we? First the health issue.

Its pretty simple. I’ve spent the last few weeks in a constant state of nausea, dizzyness, and just general feeling kinda weak. No I’m not pregnant, as my wife so lovingly suggested :P . Near as we can figure it may have been an iron deficiency. A weekend of various tastey beef dinners and I was already feeling a LOT better. We’re in the process of finding the balance, it would be bad to eat nothing but beef so we’re seeing how much I need. In the mean time, its nice to be back on my feet.

I try not to play too many video games. I mean, I’m a gamer, always have been and I have no intention of that stopping; but as I’ve grown my tastes have gotten refined and my budget has gotten tighter so Ive learned to save and invest in only the games I’m really excited about. Usually that’s a few games a year, (with random others that I may borrow from friends) but in the last 2 months I’ve gotten 6 games that I wanna play, and there’s at least 2 more coming out within the next 3 weeks. I’ve put in a lot of hours (especially in to Dragon Age and Bioshock 2), but I’ve finally started re-prioritizing and where I COULD have been lighting Splicers on fire this afternoon, I was instead drawing.

Hooray! So theres 1, hopefully to be followed by more, gonna try to get back into the dailys, And I’ll try to get this piece digitized quick to put it up here.

Clean House

Starting off the year with a clean house… well, a potentially clean house. We took everything out and attempted to reorganize and find a proper place for all of our possessions, whether that be in our house or someone else. I say potential because 2 days after taking everything out, our house is a shambles. Now Im thankful to admit, its almost back to normal, and it will be better off than it was, but for a self proclaimed OCD like myself its kinda rough and makes working a little difficult. A-ha! That’s right, I’m sure you knew this story had a purpose.

Usually I’d be drawing right now; well hopefully finished for the day or at least finishing up, but I spent the evening continuing work on the house and it took me far into my art time so I will just have to skip a day. Don’t worry, I’ll see if I can’t make it up sometime this week, and by next week you shall have forgotten, as for today, it doesn’t lessen the work I’m about to post. These are some pieces I inked last week.

Before I attempt coloring I’m gonna hit up my friends copy shop (Copyright Copies, on the corner of Capital Circle and Blair Stone) and see if I can’t get some better quality scans. I always end up scanning my work on my small scanner and piecing it together in photoshop, so I’m gonna try out their large format scanner.

Ive been attempting more complete pictures, so you’ll see a lot more backgrounds in my work now, and I’m also wanting to print some posters so I’m playing with layouts. None are definite yet. I’ve also got another project that I’m starting, and hoping to run away with. 2 of these pictures are concepts for that project, but I wont tell you which 2, not yet anyway.

Enjoy the pics!

Christmas Gift

The morning before Christmas Eve, I was approached by someone on a mission. She knew of a child (about 8 years old) who was presently dealing with cancer, and was very scared. The child was a big fan of comic books; and know this, his parents wanted to get him a “comic style” picture of him fighting off the cancer.

It’s very rare that I do art for other people (maybe I’m a little self-conscious, who knows), but I decided to take on the task and it was a great experience for me. Given such a harsh deadline, and a very direct artistic goal. I spent the day working on it and I really like the result.

I hadn’t colored anything with any traditional medium in a long time either, but I thought this was a great chance to dust off those old prismacolors sitting next to my desk.

Anyways, the picture came out pretty solid, it was a big hit, and it looks like someone else who saw it is interested in having me teach a local class on cartooning. I don’t really know if that’s something I’d like to do or not (again, maybe a little self-conscious) but it could definitely be a fun opportunity.

Heres the picture in case your curious ;) In the picture the cancer is represented by an alien, designed to resemble the shape and colors of the cancer in the picture I was given.

Never give up

Happy New Year!

So the new year has begun, and due to a long series of technical difficulties with my previous web host, Ive decided to switch to a new one. Unfortunately that also meant the accidental lost of all my previous blog content, however it also comes with a reason to update my look! So along with the new year comes a new site, and hopefully a wealth of content to follow.

If you were following on the previous version of Shelfed, you would have seen that I was doing daily art and posting it at the end of each week. I was able to take a break during the holidays and Im looking forward to getting back on the horse.

I got some copic markers for Christmas in a variety of greys. Ive never really attempted coloring or shading my art with markers but Ive started playing with them in the last week or 2 and I really like it so far!

Anyways, heres a few pieces Ive worked on in the last couple of weeks to kick of the new year…

Pluggin away…

Years almost over. 2010 is just around the corner. Im trying to get my new website set up before the beginning of the new year. Its taken me a lot longer than planned to get all the hosting and domain issues sorted out, but all that seems ok. Now I just gotta get the site fully functional and update all the content.

Almost there. Right now I’m just throwin up a quick post to help test out the site. I’m having a navigation issue thats drivin me crazy. Flash navigation that doesnt want to work unless i set it to open links in a new window. Though it works fine on the pages other than my blog… hmmm
