Christmas Gift

The morning before Christmas Eve, I was approached by someone on a mission. She knew of a child (about 8 years old) who was presently dealing with cancer, and was very scared. The child was a big fan of comic books; and know this, his parents wanted to get him a “comic style” picture of him fighting off the cancer.

It’s very rare that I do art for other people (maybe I’m a little self-conscious, who knows), but I decided to take on the task and it was a great experience for me. Given such a harsh deadline, and a very direct artistic goal. I spent the day working on it and I really like the result.

I hadn’t colored anything with any traditional medium in a long time either, but I thought this was a great chance to dust off those old prismacolors sitting next to my desk.

Anyways, the picture came out pretty solid, it was a big hit, and it looks like someone else who saw it is interested in having me teach a local class on cartooning. I don’t really know if that’s something I’d like to do or not (again, maybe a little self-conscious) but it could definitely be a fun opportunity.

Heres the picture in case your curious ;) In the picture the cancer is represented by an alien, designed to resemble the shape and colors of the cancer in the picture I was given.

Never give up
